“Don’t ask silly questions then” – Steven Gerrard slams the door shut on Newcastle

|

This was the emphatic response that the Rangers supporters had been waiting on, as Steven Gerrard effectively ruled himself out of the running for the vacant Newcastle United manager’s job.

After the major boost in the form of the opening Europa League victory in Group A for the Gers, the post-match interview with BT Sport provided more cheer for the fans.

The boss was very pleased with most aspects of the team’s performance against Brondby, with a largely controlled, steady performance putting the end result fully in thie grip.

It wasn’t perfect and decent chances were gifted to the Danes, but thankfully they did not take advantage whilst at the other end, the first half double was more than enough to merit the victory.

A first VAR goal for Rangers came after Kemar Roofe followed in Alfredo Morelos’ headed attempt – in real time in looked a clear offside but the technology told the story with Roofe dead level.

That was the gloss after the opener from Leon Balogun, who bulleted home a header from a James Tavernier corner.

Further chances came and went in the second half, but 2-0 was the final score to get the Gers off and running.

The Rangers manager then spoke to BT Sports after the game.

On speculation surrounding his own future, Gerrard lashed back:

“Do I look happy? Do I look settled? Don’t ask silly questions then”

It was a proper mic drop moment, after singing the praises of his side and certain individuals in what was a must win encounter.

The Europa League campaign is now off and running, with momentum to be taken into Sunday and the short journey to face St Mirren.
