Gerrard sends massive warning to under pressure Rangers star, hints at first-team exclusion

|

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has fired a warning at striker Alfredo Morelos after his first-team replacement last night, Jermain Defoe, found himself on the scoresheet against Hearts.

Morelos received a four-match ban for elbowing Celtic captain Scott Brown in Sunday’s derby defeat.

Defoe now has the opportunity to cement his place in the starting eleven and the manager has admitted that if the veteran forward keeps his form at a consistently high level he has every chance of keeping the Colombian out of the team.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the Ibrox boss said of his former England teammate:

I’m happy with him because he’s been a top professional. He’s been immaculate around the place. But, he won’t be too happy with me as I know Jermain better than most. He will want more minutes and I get that. I respect it.

But, he will get a run in the team now. I told him if he plays well and scores goals he will get a run.

And if he continues to play well and score goals it will be interesting in three games time.

Clearly Morelos needs to buck his ideas up if he’s to stay in the good books of the manager and heading into the summer transfer window, there’s certainly a chance that the 22-year-old is considered a liability not worth keeping.

Defoe has scored just six goals this season but if given a run you’d expect him to find his scoring touch and the confidence to bang them in consistently.

This is a critical time for the Colombian and for Rangers and the relationship between manager and player is well worth keeping an eye on.
