Rangers gaffer, Steven Gerrard, has revealed just how much his side is missing giant Swede, Filip Helander as they continue to look vulnerable defensively in his absence.

In an article in The Scottish Sun, Gerrard was honest in his assessment of his team’s defensive lapses and can’t wait to see Helander back to full fitness:

“I’m going to have to find solutions, I’m going to have to work even harder than we do to find solutions and get back to the basics of defending.”

“I need Helander back fit, sharpish. I need to find solutions because we’re conceding too many goals. It’s happened too many times now. That’s Hearts away, Aberdeen away, Killie away, Braga at home, St Johnstone away… for this football club it’s too many times.”

Helander has been out of action since suffering a foot injury in the league cup final, a game in which he had been excellent before having to leave the field. The Sweden international was still wearing a protective boot on the winter training camp in Dubai but is believed to be near to a return to full training despite a set-back in January.

His return will be a welcome boost for Gers fans after Nikola Katic’s display against St Johnstone ultimately cost his side three points, although it will be too little, too late to revive any slim chances of competing for the Scottish Premiership.

The importance of the Scottish Cup has multiplied ten-fold following the latest dropped points from a leading position and Gerrard will be hoping that his defence doesn’t put in a repeat of the last visit to Tynecastle in the quarter-finals at the weekend if he is to have any chance of landing the first elusive piece of major silverware since 2011.
