Gerrard reveals dressing room plea to do one key thing ahead of Maribor

Steven Gerrard has called on his players to have more discipline in matches after another Rangers star was sent off on Sunday.

Ross McCrorie was sent off in the first half for a swipe on Nicolai Brock-Madsen, a decision by the referee that the Gers boss, in contrast to his anger with last week’s red card at Pittodrie.

Now he’s called on his players to show more composure ahead of the trip to Slovenia, growing frustrated at the amount of cards his team are picking up in the early stages of the season.

As quoted by The Daily Mail, Gerrard said:

Again, we’ve got down to ten men. I thought that was the correct decision.

I’ve spoken to the team and praised them for the result and clean sheet. But I’ve also spoken about discipline and composure out there.

It’s difficult enough with 11 men. We are picking up too many red and yellow cards for my liking. But we’ll learn, grow and keep going.

The manager also revealed that he substituted debutant Borna Barisic off in the second half because he picked up a yellow card, having initially planned to give captain James Tavernier and full afternoon of rest.

Hopefully the side respond to his please and no more avoidable cards and sending offs occur over the next few weeks. With tough matches ahead in three competitions, Gerrard will need his best team available to progress well deeper into the new season.
