In what was a decent game at Ibrox today, there was enough quality to enjoy as Rangers ran out 2-1 winners over Hibs.

On Rangers right-flank, an intriguing duel took place in the form of Nathan Patterson versus Josh Doig, on the left for Jack Ross’ team.

Both youngsters impressed and that was not lost on Rangers manager Steven Gerrard who agreed, but felt that his player edged that particular contest.

Andy Newport of the Press Association reported on the Gers gaffer’s comments:

From those remarks, it would appear obvious that Doig is a player rated by Gerrard and that tabs will be kept on the player by the Rangers recruitment team.

“Hibs have got a real good player on their hands. I enjoyed it.”

“Two honest kids with huge potential and the future is looking bright for Scotland in terms of full-backs because I think those two have got real big chances of going all the way.”

That is real praise for the Hibs man from Gerrard who is also a firm believer in the talents of Nathan Patterson and intent on managing him effectively in the best interests of player and club.

The manager felt that Patterson just got the better of his counterpart and it was another strong performance from the Ibrox teenager.

He is sound defensively, aware, tenacious and has a rapid, direct burst going forward.

Not only does he have great potential, he is a terrific choice now – and very timely – given skipper James Tavernier’s injury and a lack of options for Gerrard in that position.

The Auchenhowie youth graduate will start against Celtic in the Scottish Cup next week and he has earned his spot.

As for Doig, keep your eye on the lad, a very good player – Gerrard will be doing the same, it appears.
