Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty is set to finalise a season-long loan move to Shrewsbury Town on Wednesday, according to STV.

The 21-year-old has found his first-team opportunities limited under Steven Gerrard so far this summer, failing to make a single appearance in competitive action.

A recently friendly performance against Wigan confirmed to many supporters he might not quite make the grade in the Rangers midfield this season.

However, STV also report that the player has been given assurances that he has a future in Gerrard’s long-term Rangers plans and simply wants the player to gain week-to-week first-team experience rather than sit on the bench at Ibrox.

The former Hamilton man only joined the club in January and looked to have potential in his 11 appearances last season, so the fact Gerrard hasn’t given up on the player will please his admirers.

He’ll have to now prove himself in League 1 over the next 12 months. Shrewsbury will be fighting for promotion after losing in the play-off final at Wembley last season to new Championship side Rotherham.

Here’s hoping that the midfielder can show why he has a future at Rangers.
