Steven Gerrard struck an optimistic tone when questioned on the future of his defensive rock, Connor Goldson.

Now into the last 12 months of his existing contract, the Wolverhampton born player would be free to negotiate with interested clubs, come the new year.

Normally, Rangers would be keen to sell any assets running down their time but the situation is much different with the former-Brighton man.

For all the relative ‘value’ that a sale now would return, it is more beneficial for Rangers to retain the player’s services and his importance to the team – especially if the Scottish champions go on to qualify for the Champions League and then there is the carrot of automatic qualification next season if the Gers retain the title.

No rush

There are risks either way but the manager was very diplomatic when asked about the situation today – giving an indication that a deal is there to be made, to extend the popular central defender’s time in Glasgow – as reported by the Herald:

“I’ve got a fantastic personal relationship with Connor,” Gerrard told Sky Sports.

“I brought him up here three years ago and he’s done an incredible job. He’s got stronger and stronger each season.”

“He’s very comfortable here, he’s a big leader. We’ve given him big responsibility making him vice-captain of this football club.”

“He’s very settled and talks are on-going. I’m confident we can get it to where we need to get it.”

“But at the same time we will respect Connor’s space. There’s no need to rush.”

“We’ve got that strong personal relationship, his advisers are in touch with the club and things are moving forward.”
