Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has been told he can leave Ibrox on loan this summer as he searches for regular first-team football just six months after arriving at the club.

That’s according to The Evening Times, who report that clubs like Sunderland are interested in taking the former Hamilton man on a temporary basis.

The 21-year-old made eleven appearances in the second half of last season after making the switch from the Accies, signing on a four-and-a-half-year deal to much fanfare.

However, since Steven Gerrard has arrived he hasn’t really been involved in initial team selections, with the new manager opting to sign the likes of Ovie Ejaria on loan instead.

Docherty is clearly a talented player so taking the decision to let him leave for the season is something of a surprise, especially since the young player would likely learn loads from a midfield legend such as Gerrard.

Rangers have made a number of signings this summer but are still only an injury and suspension or two away from looking light in the middle of the park and Docherty definitely provides depth.

Still, if he is not in the actual starting eleven plans of Gerrard then there is no use having him sit around on the bench when he needs to keep learning on a week-to-week basis with regular first team football.
