Steven Gerrard has promised he will fight as hard as possible to keep Alfredo Morelos at the club after the Colombian helped the side to a 3-0 victory at home to Livingston on Saturday.

The Colombian has scored 16 goals already this season and his closing in on last term’s tally of 18 despite the season not yet entering December.

It’s undoubtedly going to lead to interest from clubs in bigger leagues and while it’s pretty obvious he will move on at some stage, the manager is adamant about his desire to keep him at Ibrox.

As quoted by BBC Scotland, Gerrard said of the striker:

I will fall out with people to keep him here, that’s how much I like him.

He is happy, he is enjoying his work. I’m told by people who have been around a long time it’s the happiest he has looked.

He recently signed a new deal. He has just got to keep going. The key thing for us is to keep him healthy and try to avoid these yellow cards. I’ll fight tooth and nail to keep him here as long as possible.

I love him and respect him – but I also understand every player has his price. From day one I have told you I love him and that hasn’t changed. It has grown, it is getting more.

I want to keep him here as long as possible because he makes my job a lot easier.

More than anyone, Gerrard probably recognises that retaining the forward in January is absolutely vital if we’re going to challenge for major honours in the second half of the season.

If we do have to eventually sell him, we can only hope it comes in a summer transfer window rather than a January one, which would give us time to sort out a proper replacement.

Until then we’ll just have to enjoy his performances and the effectiveness they have. Yesterday could have easily result in a draw if he hadn’t come on to immediately liven up our attacking threat.

Here’s to many more displays like that.
