Rangers manager Steven Gerrard wants quality brought in to help his current squad after watching his team crash out of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night.

Admitting he had enough players to compete with the other sides in Group  G, the Ibrox boss nonetheless feels the current starting eleven could do with an injection of fresh talent, hinting at his January transfer window plans.

As quoted by The Scotsman, Gerrard said after last night’s match:

We’ve certainly been tested. As a group, we haven’t helped ourselves with certain situations and suspensions. Injuries have also bit at important times, like with Kent at the weekend.

In terms of numbers, I think we have had enough to cope. But to compete at this level, with ambitions to go further than the group, it’s obvious to me that the players need some help.

That means obviously quality players that can come in and help.

During the summer transfer window, it’s clear that the manager went with a policy of quantity over quality when bringing in a raft of free transfers and loan signings.

Some have worked, like Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield, while others such have Umar Sadiq have been complete flops.

To change the recruitment strategy with a focus on bringing in real quality to the squad could make transfer windows a bit more frustrating for fans, but in the long-term should pay off.

There’s plenty of deadwood already at the club and so cutting down squad numbers while attracting first-team ready talent is clearly the way to go.

Can the club deliver on Gerrard’s transfer desires?
