Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox, manager Steven Gerrard was in front of the media loosely discussing his plans for the coming January transfer window, and obviously he’s looking to get some players out of the door to free up space and finances for further strengthening.

With the Europa League dream coming to an end after a largely pleasing run given all the changes we have gone through since last season, the three points on Sunday put us back to the top of the Premiership table and Gerrard’s words show he’s looking to do everything he can to keep us there.

Speaking to Sky Sports the former Liverpool and England man explained.

“Between now and January 5 we’ll make a decision on Pena. Does he have any future here? I think that would be a very long shot. Could it affect January? I don’t know. That’s a question you’d have to ask people above me, but it is a frustration when you know large sums of money are going out of the club and we’re not getting any contribution for it. That’s the reality and the facts of it. Some of the players not with me are earning big money
compared to the rest of the group. That’s money I could be doing with to recycle, make the team stronger and make it compete better. Hopefully we can wheel and deal, move people on, bring others in and put us in a better position.”

Clearly Pena isn’t the only topic of debate and we continue to pay for previous expensive mistakes – mistakes we will be looking to avoid in the future even if you can’t guarantee success in the transfer market.

Given his actual record at Rangers and some of his showings, there will be those wanting the 28-year-old to get another crack, but I would guess they are in a minority. Even if Gerrard did wipe the slate clean though, given his recent loan spells haven’t exactly been a success, a fresh break for all seems the only outcome.
