Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has admitted that talks are underway to tie down two of his most important players.

Connor Goldson and Glen Kamara are major components of Gerrard’s Premiership champions – between them they have made a massive 61 appearances, to date, in the Gers march to the title.

Having already secured the likes of James Tavernier, Allan McGregor and Steven Davis on new deals, the focus has now turned to securing other primary assets in preparation for the next chapter.

The impressive form of Goldson and Kamara has alerted suitors and the Ibrox hierarchy are primed for bids to be received this summer – that is an obvious consequence of success.

Reality

It is more than likely that one or two first team players will be sold in the close season.

Rangers are on the record as to the importance of player trading and realising the value of assets at the right time – a balancing act has to be struck.

This is a reality on the path to self-sufficiency.

After the weekend’s Scottish Cup success against Celtic, Gerrard made an admission on his aims to secure the signing of Goldson and Kamara on fresh terms, whilst praising the virtues of impressive elder statesmen of his team:

“McGregor, I am bored of speaking about him! He is world class, I have said it before.”

“We have just given him a year deal but we should have given him a ten year one because he can have my job after me if he wants it!”

“We love him that much he can have whatever he wants.”

“Steven Davis was majestic in the middle of the park alongside Glen Kamara.”

“Glen is someone who we are still trying and talking to to commit here because he is a big player for us. Connor Goldson is the same.”

“There are a lot of players we are working with to try and get them tied up here because they are so important for the team moving forward.”

It is very much a case of rewarding success as well as protecting the club – essential business at a time of continued growth and scale at Ibrox.
