Gerrard demands financial backing from Dave King and Rangers board this summer

|

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has warned the club’s decision makers that he will need finances this summer to strengthen his first-team squad, as reported by The Daily Mail.

We are facing another summer of rebuilding at Ibrox, although it should be less dramatic than in previous years when a change of manager has occurred.

There are a number positions that need strengthened in the first-team and Gerrard is looking for that sparkle and polish that can mean the difference between winning silverware and finishing as also-rans.

The former Liverpool man knows better than anyone that quality like that costs money and he wants financial backing from Dave King and the Rangers board when the transfer window opens.

As quoted by The Daily Mail, the Ibrox boss explained ahead of this weekend’s match against Celtic:

We are going to need support, financial support. We’ve built a decent base since we came in here in terms of the changes and what we’ve tried to do.

We are doing everything we can to improve things at the training ground, at Ibrox and within the team. Tactically, we believe we have moved on leaps and bounds.

But the reality is, when you’ve built your cake, you need a lovely icing on it and a bit of decoration on it that will hopefully make a difference.

And you know and I know that costs money. That’s the brutal truth of it. Sometimes it’s hard to do on a free contract or a loan because, for example, Ryan Kent might be going back.

I’m still as confident as I was when I came in that we can achieve that but I am going to need some help and support – that’s the reality of it.

A massive 20 players have arrived at the club since Gerrard became Gers boss last year and this summer fans will be hoping for a policy of quality over quantity.

We’ve had a number of wasted loan and permanent signings over the last 12 months and the recruitment team need to be a bit more discerning when it comes to bringing players to Ibrox.

Players such as Umar Sadiq, Jon Flanagan, Ovie Ejaria all stand-out as flops and we can’t continue to make big mistakes in the market, or we’ll never get close to Celtic.
