Rangers manager Steven Gerrard believes that Allan McGregor is ‘up there’ with Pepe Reina as one of the best goalkeepers he’s ever played or worked with.

The Ibrox boss spoke in glowing terms of McGregor after another sensational performance in European action on Thursday night.

Asked where McGregor ranks in terms of players he’s been fortunate enough to count a colleague, the former Liverpool man could only come up with one other name.

As quoted by The Daily Record, Gerrard said:

Domestically, Pepe Reina is the best I’ve played with. But Allan is up there with him, for sure. I wasn’t lucky enough to play with him but I’m delighted to have him as one of my players.

He’s similar to Pepe in many ways, I have the same trust in both of them.

When someone was through on goal and Reina was there, I always felt he could bail us out. You get that same feeling with McGregor. To win the biggest games in any league, you need a top goalie.

Going on to declare Mark Allen as a ‘genius’ for bringing him to Ibrox on a free transfer, it’s clear that Gerrard sees McGregor as perhaps the most important player in the Rangers side right now.

It’s hard to argue against that argument given the amount of and quality of saves he’s made already this season.

He’ll likely be called into plenty of action again today at Tynecastle, with the Gers going head-to-head with Hearts in an attempt to put real title pressure on Celtic.
