Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has admitted he admires the talents of Hearts defender John Souttar, but refused to be drawn on making a move for the Scotland international, as reported by The Express.

Fans will have a good chance to see the centre-back up close today, with Craig Levein naming him in the side to face the Gers at Tynecastle this lunchtime.

The Gers were linked with a move for the player last week, with The Daily Record reporting that Gerrard was keen on bringing him to Ibrox as a replacement for Joe Worrall, who is due to return to parent club Nottingham Forest.

The press had their first opportunity to ask Gerrard about the speculation yesterday and while he didn’t elaborate too much on the interest, did clearly show he is a fan of the 22-year-old.

As quoted by The Express, the Ibrox boss said:

He’s a player I admire but there are tons I admire in this league and any other league. In terms of the speculation in the papers, it hasn’t come from myself or anyone in Rangers.

I’ll never speak about someone else’s player and certainly not on the eve of battle.

Clearly Gerrard isn’t looking to step on any toes in advance of today’s Scottish Premiership fixture.

What Rangers will be looking to do is exploit any weaknesses in Souttar’s game, as the team attempt to win our third match on the bounce after defeat to Celtic at the end of last month.

Anything but a win will open the door for the Hoops to win the league tomorrow at Easter Road.

Obviously we are already looking ahead to next season, but picking up as many positive results between now and the end of May should give us some hope heading into the summer.

  • I get the feeling that Hearts are going to ask for a big fee for the boy, they don’t have to sell just now. I don’t think Stevie will pay through the nose for him, he’d be better served hunting down south for another proven quality player like Goldson.
