Gerrard backed to “do something special” as former Ger reacts to departure rumours

|

Former Rangers full-back, Alan Hutton believes that Steven Gerrard is in it for the long haul at Ibrox and will not leave until he has tasted success at the club.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton revealed why he thinks the Gers gaffer will turn down any advances from down south, in the short term at least.

So what has Hutton said?

When asked about the recent speculation claiming that Birmingham City were lining Gerrard up for their hot seat, he said:

“I think you always have to think about it, you’re not daft and he definitely won’t be daft.

“You’ve always got to think of the situation that the club’s in and he’s obviously got aspirations and dreams to manage at a high level.

“If there was a top Championship team, or a Premier League team, I think he would have a think about it but at the moment in time, he’s very into what he’s doing and that’s building something at Rangers.

“He’s building a young, hungry team to go forward and compete against Celtic and that’s his main aim at the moment. I don’t think it would look great if he jumped ship early doors, I think he’s here for the next few years and he wants to do something special with Rangers.”

So is Hutton correct?

Gerrard knows that until he wins something at Rangers – despite the progress he has made and the Europa League runs – his tenure will be seen as a failure.

Even from his playing career, despite all the trophies he won at Liverpool, his detractors will always point to the absence of a Premier League winners medal in his trophy cabinet as a stick to beat him with.

Where does Rangers "target" Lyndon Dykes current play his football?

He had other options before he joined the Light Blues and there is a reason he turned them down to take over at Ibrox, status and prestige, the club matches his ambition and is a perfect grounding for his dream job – to be Jurgen Klopp’s replacement.

If Gerrard is to get the Liverpool job he will need to have been successful in his management career so far, and if that is delivering title 55, he will leave with the blessing of the Gers fans and a place forever in their hearts.
