Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty doesn’t know if Steven Gerrard intends to recall him from Shrewsbury Town in the January transfer window, but remains hopeful of a long-term career at Ibrox.

The 22-year-old has been in excellent form for the League One side so far this season, scoring six times and assisting four more in 21 appearances.

It’s form that has attracted the attention of onlooking Rangers supporters, who have wondered whether he could make an early return from his season-long loan to England.

Docherty is remaining focused on his football but has stated his desire to make an impact at Ibrox.

As quoted by The Sunday Post, the former Hamilton star said:

As far as I’m aware I have signed for the season at Shrewsbury Town. I don’t know if there is an option to take me back to Rangers next month.

I’m aware there has been some chat on the internet about it, but I honestly couldn’t tell you. However, it’s nice that people are taking notice of what I’m doing here.

When I joined Shrewsbury in the summer it was with the intention to be here for the season, get as many games as possible under my belt, and go back to Rangers a better player and a stronger person.

It goes without saying I keep an eye on every Rangers result and I’m willing the club on every day to be successful. My long-term plan is to be a first-team player at Rangers. That’s my aim.

It’s not only pleasing to see the midfield prospect flourish outside of familiar surroundings down in England but also that he still holds Rangers close to his heart and sees the move as a proving ground rather than a step back in his career.

With our current problems in the middle of the park, perhaps recalling him early wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, especially with players like Ovie Ejaria and Lassana Coulibaly rapidly losing form.

Would we be better served investing in one of our own rather than a loan player who has no long-term future at the club?
