If Rangers were prepared to wait until the summer to find Mark Warburton’s replacement then former Ajax and Inter Milan boss Frank De Boer could return to Ibrox according to his brother Ronald.
The pair played for Rangers in 2014 with Frank mentioned as a potential option to return as our next boss. Should the Gers harbour any hopes of this we’ll have to appoint a short-term option – which has been mooted – until the end of the season.
A return to management wouldn’t be secured until the Dutchman was able to be in a position to shape a squad the way they wanted.
Ronald told BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound.
‘He will never take a team at this time of year. Frank won’t go into that (whether there has been an approach from Rangers) but he told me, and I knew this already, that he’s waiting probably until the end of April and then he will take his decision on what options are on the table.’
His spell with Inter Milan was poor, which resulted in Frank lasting just a few months at the San Siro before he was sacked. However, this spell shouldn’t have done his career too much harm.
This lesson from his time in Italy is one he’s taken on board so wouldn’t have any interest in returning to Ibrox until the summer if he did at all.
‘He wants to have a decent run-up. He had this lesson with Inter Milan when he had only two weeks to start the league, he couldn’t really prepare the team. I think he learned from that so he wants to have a good pre-season and get to know the players very well. He will never take, for example, the Rangers job just now. That’s not in question.’
With Frank having a specific way of playing Ronald went on to say he would have to know if Rangers could adapt to ‘his philosophy’ and his style of play. Having some level of finance available to work with would also be important.
Commenting on Warburton’s exit Ronald said.
‘Of course (I have sympathy for Warburton). You have to be patient, take your time and of course some players will do great in the Championship and then when you come to the Premiership it’s different.’
He finished.
‘Sometimes you have to see it happen and then you can judge certain players, because the pressure is suddenly way higher. The money is not there anymore, it’s in La Liga or the Premier League, in the German league, the Italian – even the French league is more exciting than the Dutch and the Scottish. It’s very difficult so we have to accept we have to build with young talent and have to be patient.’
