Manager Ally McCoist couldn’t hide his delight at either the win or the performance in last night’s Scottish Cup game against Dunfermline.
The four nil victory was secured thanks to a Dean Shiels hattrick and a solitary goal from David Templeton, and whilst the scoreline was impressive, so were the overall efforts of the side over the course of 90 minutes.
Speaking to the Official Site after seeing us book our place in the quarter finals, McCoist was quick to praise the overall team effort on the day rather than pick out individuals for their efforts.
‘I thought it was a great 90 minutes and we were solid throughout the match. There were some terrific individual performances but overall we were really delighted with the team.’
Speaking about the hattrick specifically, McCoist says that Dean Shiels’ opener was a good strikers’ goal as he found himself half a yard, eased the defender out of it with his backside and stuck it away. For his second and third goals, he thought the build up was very good and he was pleased to see him get in on the end of them.
The joy for McCoist given the pre season issues that Shiels had, and Templeton to be fair, is that now he’s back and firing on all cylinders again he’s not only putting in the effort and the workrate upfront, but he’s chipping in with very valuable goals again, but equally he’s now keeping a good standard of fitness and sharpness which has been an issue previously – so with Templeton performing well as well on the night – he’s pleased for both of them that the niggles and injuries seem well behind them now.
As for putting ourselves through to the quarter finals, McCoist is obviously pleased as punch with that progression, and he’s now hoping for a home tie when the draw takes place on Sunday.
The hopes of a unique treble are still well alive for the club this season.
‘Being in the next round is great, it’s a boost for everybody and we wanted to give the fans something to look forward to. The boys did that tonight and I would be happy if we could replicate that performance in the next round against anybody. In the Cup competitions all you can ask for is a home tie, that would be great.’
McCoist goes on to say that Rangers obviously aren’t favourites with the teams left in the competition now, but he feels that if we perform to our best levels we are more than a match for anybody we could face, but rightly isn’t daft enough to say we can beat everyone.
‘I think we have a team that is probably a competent top flight team that would be capable of doing alright. No better or worse than that. That’s where I see us at the moment.’
