Ferguson thinks Rangers need to sign one player this summer – could be ‘absolutely key’

|

Former Ibrox captain Barry Ferguson is eager for Rangers to tie down Steven Davis as soon as possible, believing he could be a massive player next season, writing in his regular Daily Record column.

Davis is technically due to leave the Gers come the end of the current campaign after only joining on loan in the January transfer window. Both that deal and his Southampton contract will expire, leaving the Northern Ireland international as a free agent heading into the summer.

Ferguson believes the Gers should tie him down as soon as possible because he could be a massive performer in trying to win the league title next term.

Writing for The Daily Record, the Rangers legend explained:

I cannot stress enough what an impact Steve Davis has had on the way this team is now playing and what a difference he has made to the whole style of play.

Gerrard will be a busy man throughout the transfer market this summer but he’ll struggle to do a better of business than sitting Davo down right now and getting him tied up.

As far as I’m concerned, the last three wins have given Gerrard his blueprint for next season and Davis and Jermain Defoe should be absolutely key to it.

All of a sudden, Rangers are on the front foot, closing people down, playing with an energy, flair and confidence that hasn’t always been there over the course of the season.

Davis initially struggled on his return to the club in January but Ferguson is right, over the last few matches he has been a magnificent performer in the middle of the park, allowing our more creative players to really flourish in the final third.

The 34-year-old may be in the latter stages of his career but handing him a contract is a no-brainer and must be done sooner rather than later. There’s always a risk he could end up signing on somewhere else.

It could be one of the most important bits of business of the summer.
