Barry Ferguson refused to play down his desire for a role within the management team at Ibrox, in the ongoing discussion around the position of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

As captain, Ferguson set the standard in many ways. His will to win, controlled aggression, application and ability set him apart over the course of his Rangers career. Yes, there were some low points amongst the many highs including the way his time at Rangers ended, but he was a player who truly made his mark at Ibrox.

Take the treble winning season of 2002/03 under Alex McLeish when Ferguson combined with Ronald de Boer in particular to lead the way for the team, time and time again.

Due to his achievements, his words carry weight – he has been there and done it, simple as that. Now, as a coach in his own right, there may be questions about his ability and influence making a Rangers return in any capacity questionable, but he wasn’t shy in declaring his desire to make that happen.

In the talk around Gio and what needs to happen, it was put to the 46-times capped fomer Scotland captain if he would answer the call if a former player was though to be part of the solution:

“You don’t need to ask me that. I think you know the answer. Rangers is my team. I was lucky enough to have the privilege to play there as captain and win so many trophies.”

“So of course I would be. I would be lying if I said no.”

He added on Monday’s Go Radio Football Show on his belief that the experience and presence of a former player is required in the Ibrox dugout:

“I do think it’s certainly needed. One springs to mind, like a Neil McCann say, who has done a bit of management.”

“I think it’s needed that players like that come in and help a manager. It’s something that I think is badly needed, no doubt in my mind.”
