Former Rangers skipper, Barry Ferguson, has once again opened his mouth before engaging his brain with his latest comments, this time on Ianis Hagi.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer and reported in The Scottish Sun, he gives his assessment on how much Rangers should pay for the Romanian international as speculation increases that a deal is close to being announced.

So what has Ferguson said?

When asked to reflect on the rumours that the deal is close to completion, he said:

“I don’t think it is going to be anywhere near £5million. I would probably look nearer the £2m or just below that.

“He certainly has potential and showed flashes when he was here. He’s still not got that consistency level because he’s only coming up for 21. It was an eye-opener coming over to Glasgow.

“You know what it is like to play for Rangers or Celtic. You are under severe pressure and he’s probably never felt that before.

“But I do think he’s certainty got potential but I don’t think it is going to be anywhere near that transfer fee you mentioned.

“I am not sure where his best position is. Whether it is on the right, left or just behind the forward. If I was Rangers I would certainly go and take him at the £2m mark.”

So is Ferguson correct?

Well, no, Ferguson overlooks one minor detail, there is already an exclusive fee agreed as part of his loan contract with Genk – believed to be in the region of £4million – so regardless of what he thinks, that is the fee that will required to sign him.

Since Hagi arrived, he has – on an almost weekly basis – been linked with a series of big clubs across the continent, Lazio and Seville are said to be at the top of this list but the playmaker is happy in Glasgow and people close to him believe that a permanent deal is only a matter of time.

Who scored a hat-trick in "The Laudrup Final"?

From a man who proclaimed that Rangers should “splash the cash” for his nephew Lewis Ferguson at Aberdeen it seems strange that he is reluctant for his old club to pay below the market value for a player who is so highly thought of across Europe.

Hagi’s performances in the Europa League alone justify the £4m fee and after almost single handedly dragging Rangers past Braga, the extra money gained from reaching the last 16 pretty much covers the deal, alternatively, on Fergie’s recommendation, Steven Gerrard should turn down the possibility of signing such a talented youngster in favour of someone who runs around a lot and “gets stuck in” – it’s a tough one.
