Rangers fans have been told to trust Steven Gerrard’s judgement on recruitment after the success of the last few transfer windows despite the signing of Fashion Sakala perhaps not being a headline maker.

This is according to Kevin Phillips who, speaking to Football Insider, doesn’t think Sakala will be a name that excites fans despite analysts and recruitment specialists praising the move, when asked if he thought that the Gers faithful would be impressed, he said:

“No, I wouldn’t think so.

“At the end of the day, they need to back Steven Gerrard’s decision making and they have done that before.

“His judgement, his recruitment departed, they haven’t done a lot wrong since he went to Rangers.

“The fans might be surprised but some might be excited as well. He can come and be a success, let’s see how it goes.”

Sakala shows up well on the obligatory YouTube videos, he is quick, can finish on either foot and looks like he will be a threat in the final third, offering a skillset that we don’t have just now. As we have seen in midfield, where we have different types of players, variety can provide tactical changes without really altering the team’s shape.

Gone are the days where we will sign the likes of Ronald or Frank de Boer, certainly at their peaks anyway. The profile of the type of player that we target now has changed significantly, and for the most part, they will have to have sell on value, and that takes precedent over whether or not fans will be excited.
