Rangers academy and pathway to the first-team squad is in a much better shape than it was when Billy Gilmour left Auchenhowie to move to London’s bright lights with Chelsea.
Steven Gerrard is now keen to avoid a repeat of the situation that saw one of the Light Blues most prized assets head south after it emerged that West Ham United have made a bid in the region of £600,000 for Kai Kennedy, as reported by Football Insider and the player himself:
“It is extremely flattering that West Ham have made an offer for me and it would be a great opportunity to be able to work with a top manager such as David Moyes, but I am a Rangers player until I am told otherwise.”
Kennedy’s Rangers career has been far from plain sailing, a mixture of contract issues and – assumed – attitude problems made it look like he was heading out the door only for him to sign a new contract which takes him up to the summer of 2023 buying the club a bit of time in planning his development.
The forward did well out on loan last season and should be looking to take a step up to the Premiership to test himself at a higher level, he’s not been seen around the first-team in pre-season so it would be a surprise if he is suddenly promoted.
He still has a lot to learn but clearly has potential, he just needs to get his head down and have a solid 12 months where provides the sort of numbers that a Rangers should be contributing, then he might get a chance for our own top manager.
