Vital Rangers understands that Rangers new chairman Alastair Johnston has been placed in the role at the request of Rangers` prospective new owners.

Sir David Murray`s relinquishing of the chairman`s position this week has given the strongest hint yet that the strongly-rumoured takeover that has been the talk of the terraces for many months now is on the verge of completion.

The clap-trap about wanting to spend time on other ventures isn`t entirely false on Murray`s part, but for a man who has been virtually anonymous in recent years to try and convince those who can see past the media spin that we still somehow take up so much of his precious time is outright laughable. Murray already has a back-seat – that`s why we have Martin Bain.

Mr Johnston will assume the role of chairman for a new owner in the fullness of time – to suggest that this is “McLelland mkII” is somewhat misguided.

It is believed that Murray has finally accepted he will not recoup the kind of fee he has held out for over the years, and that a bid of as low as £20 million could be more than enough for the deal to complete, hence the upturn in activity recently.

Alastair Johnston`s North-American firm IMG, of whom he is vice-chairman, are strongly rumoured to be involved in the takeover, with the huge-firms potential involvement likely to make the difficult prospect of attracting investors to Rangers and Scottish Football a marginally easier problem.

There is no timescale on how or when the deal will be complete, hopefully in time for January to allow for movement in the transfer market.
