Rangers have given themselves a two goal advantage in the UEFA Europa League qualifying tie against Maribor after a 3-1 win at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos opened the scoring with a poacher’s effort just a few minutes into the match, with captain James Tavernier netting a penalty that Morelos won in the second half to put Steven Gerrard’s side back into the lead after Maribor equalised.

A late effort from Lassana Coulibaly rounded things off nicely with just four minutes remaining.

Stand-out performer Morelos has started the season superbly and it looks as though confidence has returned to his game, with his performance tonight arguably one of his best since he arrived from HJK Helsinki last summer.

Steven Gerrard appears to know how to get the best out of the player and we can only hope that there’s no late transfer window interest in him towards the end of August.

The Gers will now travel to Slovenia next week hoping to finish the tie off and progress to the play-off round.
