‘Doesn’t win you an Old Firm’ – Gerrard sends Celtic derby warning to Rangers stars

|

Steven Gerrard has warned his Rangers players they won’t win today’s derby match if they repeat the performance against Hibs last week.

The Gers are on a five game winning streak since losing to Celtic in the last Old Firm match at Celtic Park.

However, the performance in the second half of that match appears to have been a turning point for this team, taking the kind of belief from that 45 minutes that has allowed us to play some of our best stuff of the season since.

Last week’s display against Hibs wasn’t the best though and despite the 1-0 win, Gerrard wasn’t especially happy.

Now he’s warned his stars if they play like that again at Ibrox later today then they’ll come up short.

As quoted by The Daily Record, he said:

The last time we played at Parkhead, from half-time onwards and even with 10 men, the players were excellent. They did everything they could in that 45 minutes to take something from the game.

Even though we lost, we gave the 10 men left on the pitch a lot of praise. To roll their sleeves up like they did against a good team on a big pitch meant we actually took a lot of confidence away from that Old Firm.

That belief has now just snowballed from there and we’ve been very good.

Now we need to take that form and try to find another performance as it will be another tough challenge.

We need to make sure we’re right at it as the performance and the intensity we put in against Hibs, with all due respect, doesn’t win you an Old Firm.

The manager, players and fans have every reason to be looking forward to today’s match.

It may not make any material difference to the outcome of our season but we have a chance to show Neil Lennon’s side we won’t be messing around next season. A victory could set the tone for an exciting 2019/20.

We’ve scored 12 goals and conceded just twice in our last five matches and Celtic are going to have to produce quite the performance to get the win on our own patch.
