On-loan defender George Edmundson has stepped up his comeback bid as he nears his debut for Derby County.

The Rams manager Wayne Rooney provided an update on his situation today, as reported by Derbyshire Live

Edmundson’s last appearance for Rangers was on 27th September when he replaced Jordan Jones in the 76th minute of a 5-1 victory for Steven Gerrard’s men at Fir Park.

The former Oldham central defender was unlucky to turn the ball into his own net for Motherwell’s consolation goal late in the second half.

Jones was on the scoresheet for Rangers that day in what was his first start in the Premiership season but he would only appear in two more games, before his loan move to Sunderland.

Both players were the infamous protagonists in the covid protocol breach when they were found to have attended a party gathering in Glasgow, which saw them banned and then banished from Gerrard’s first team picture.

Fast forward to the present and both are now in England for vital game time.

Rooney is hopeful that Edmundson will be in a position to return to his squad next week.

England’s all-time top goalscorer said of the player:

“He has joined in bits of the sessions this week and he had his first full training session today (Thursday).

“He’s doing really well, Saturday will be a bit too soon for him to be involved but he might be an option for me on Tuesday depends on how he is the next few days.”

Derby are set to host Middlesbrough on Saturday ahead of a trip to play Wycombe on Tuesday evening.
