Two-time Rangers player and pundit, Kenny Miller has backed his old club to end Celtic’s dominance of Scottish football by lifting the first silverware of the season on Sunday according to an interview with the Glasgow Evening Times.

Miller divides opinion amongst Rangers fans with many unwilling to forgive him for his stint in the green and white hoops and their most bitter rivals.

So what has Miller said?

When asked for his match prediction for Sunday’s Old Firm league cup final, Miller said:

“I will say 2-1 for Rangers and it wouldn’t surprise if the game goes to extra time”.

“Maybe it’s my heart ruling my head but I just have a feeling this might be the right time for Celtic’s run to come to an end. Celtic have been relentless. Their drive and desire has been so impressive but I just think this might be the time for Rangers”.

So is Miller correct?

Ultimately, only time will tell, both teams will be highly motivated to secure the first silverware of the season with either side capable of landing a psychological blow early in the season.

A Rangers victory would end nearly a decade of pain and anguish for the support and also mark the true beginning of the club’s recovery and aspirations to return to the top of Scottish football.

However, a Celtic victory would mean ten consecutive league trophies and leave an air of invincibility that battle scarred Rangers players may not be able to recover from in time for the Old Firm derby at Parkhead on the 29th December, falling further behind in the league before the winter break could prove to be catastrophic.

Miller does have a point though, form never has much bearing in Old Firm games and there has been little between the two sides this season, Celtic can’t and won’t continue to win every trophy indefinitely and their time will have to come to an end at some point.

If Rangers defence returns to their more reliable ways, they certainly have the firepower in the shape of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos to cause them problems, they will also be keen to make amends for the timid nature in which they surrendered at Ibrox in September in the 2-0 defeat – notably, Morelos started on the bench and Kent wasn’t yet signed – both players will be out to prove a point.

Will Rangers win the league cup?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Celtic have been impressive, but so have Rangers in their own right, they have also overcome good teams in highly pressurised fixtures in the Europa League, they have improved almost immeasurably since Steven Gerrard took over but there is just one more objective and tangible goal to be achieved before it can truly be said that they are back – if Miller is correct, that announcement may just be made in spectacular style on Sunday.
