Charlie McCann has stated that he has no desire to go out on loan, that he would rather stay to fight for minutes and recognition.

His current case at Rangers is a very interesting one, coming at a time when is stock is rising high. The only problem with that is the pecking order of the midfield at Ibrox and the senior options at Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s disposal.

Regardless of that, 20-year old McCann is up for the challenge as well as the journey of development that has to come with close collaboration and learning from the likes of Glen Kamara, John Lundstram, Ryan Jack and Steven Davis.

It is the latter who has more than an influence on the former Manchester United youth player for club and country, given his relatively recent defection from the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland.

He touched on that and more in conversation with the Rangers Review at the Ibrox training day on Monday.

As for his short-term future and his thoughts on a potential loan, McCann said:

“There’s always an option of that but I think, at the minute, I’m looking at staying, establishing myself and getting some minutes and trying to push for a spot in the team or at least involvement in the team in the games coming up this season.”

On seeing himself as a holding midfielder or attacking midfielder, he added:

“I can do a bit of everything in the midfield to be fair. I enjoy playing the 6 and getting on the ball and starting everything off for the team but I also like to think I can create things and get goals and assists.”

“It’s what I try to do if I get in those areas of the pitch because that’s what I enjoy doing.”

Chance

McCann’s cameos last season and again at the recent Blackpool friendly show the talent he possesses.

The young midfielder is technically proficient and adept in his play to merit a place in the squad at present, now it is all about how far he can go.

There will be minutes for him to come this season. Just like Alex Lowry, the chance is his for the taking.
