The interruption to the minute’s silence for Remembrance Sunday by a group of Celtic fans was entirely expected and as such, it’s probably unfair to denigrate the entire Celtic support as a result.
However, Rangers and their support have found themselves in the dock and publically vilified for the actions of an equal minority in Romania last week.
The difference? Many media outlets chose to protect the Celtic support – In the case of Sky Sports, the singing of Republican songs with sectarian add-ons during this silence were muted. It is entirely understandable why Sky did this, however, what isn’t understandable is the fact that Sky made no reference to the fact that a group of Celtic fans had provided a significant interruption to the silence – leaving the casual viewer totally unaware of why the Falkirk fans were chanting ‘your Scum and you know you are’ along with booing at the end of the silence.
So by doing this, they’ve potentially made the Falkirk fans look bad but protected Celtic from the flak. Is this truly fair?
We’ve been told as well that the reason Sky broadcast footage of the small number of Rangers fans causing trouble in Romania last week on Sky Sports, Sky Sports News, Sky News and SkyNews.com was because it was from an outside broadcast no controlled by Sky.
Surely this now must set a precedent? If a group of supporters are let down by a minority – and on BOTH occasions, that what it was – Will Sky throw a blanket over the whole thing and leave the offending group of fans unscathed?
I have my doubts, somehow.
Celtic fans were provided all of the proof they would ever require over the weekend to prove that there is only one club in Glasgow who is the ‘Establishment Club’.
…..and it most certainly isn’t Rangers.
