Rangers’ gaffer Pedro Caixinha has spoken of his delight at seeing goalkeeper Wes Foderingham sign a new extension at the club yesterday.

With the former Swindon Town stopper signing an extension that sees him remain at Ibrox until at least the summer of 2020, Caixinha told the Official Site that he was pleased to see our number 1 sign on for longer as he still has so much developing left to do and the Portuguese manager is convinced he will only continue to get better and better.

‘Wes is our number one and we are glad that he has signed his agreement with the club. He still isn`t at the age where goalkeepers are usually mature, so he still has room to grow and get that maturity.’

He went on to say that for him it’s vital in modern football that a goalkeeper is capable of playing with his feet and Foderingham ticks those boxes for him, but again there’s room for improvement – but that should apply to every player.

‘It is important in modern football to have a goalkeeper who is good at playing with his feet from the back and that is something that is important in our game. We need to keep working with him regarding his decisions on the moments on when to release the ball, or to take a decision to not release it and to compact the team a bit more.’

Adding.

‘He is a guy who is very safe on the posts and he is very good at one to ones and he is getting more confidence, which we can see game by game and also his controlling of crosses. It`s about getting that evolution to get that level of maturity for a goalkeeper to play at such a massive club like Rangers.’

Having missed only two games so far this season with Jak Alnwick coming in for the League Cup ties, Caixinha was also delighted with the goalkeeping unit overall and the competition we have.

‘We are happy because we have a very good group of goalkeepers at the club working with Wes. Jak played against Partick Thistle and we decided to give him this competition and we know he will do very good and we want to win it with him in goal. We also have Liam and Robby, who is not currently with us as the fourth goalkeeper so we are happy with the group.’
