On the outside, Michael Beale came across as assured, assertive and confident but once or twice he allowed the excitement to emanate from the inside.

The setting was the famous Blue Room for his maiden press conference, an honour afforded to every new permanent manager of Rangers Football Club.

Beale fielded a range of questions and whilst there was nothing new or groundbreaking revealed, he provided enough substance in his answers to suggest that he realises the magnitude of the challenge that faces him as well as relishing it.

“It will all become very real, very quickly. I look forward to all of that. The 15th of December is a date I’m counting down to.”

That was just one of the quotes from the former Ibrox first team coach to whet the appetite, he is a man on a mammoth mission who knows what is required and expected with a fervent belief on how it can be achieved.

A major obstacle to Beale’s intentions will be the need to add significant quality to his squad over the next couple of transfer windows to ensure that the team moves forward. Collectively, there has not been enough progress since the title win in 2021, with last season’s European heroics proving to be a peculiar outlier against a backdrop of domestic regression. The short lived former QPR boss refused to be drawn on the depth or standing of his squad going forward, shrewdly insisting that this was an initial time to monitor the current crop as well as intending to get more from them.

His man-management is at work already, with two weeks to go until the actions begins for real against Hibs at Ibrox.
