As the news of Walter Smith’s passing filtered through yesterday morning, it was somewhat of a surprise to see Ally McCoist on duty with TalkSport.

As Super Ally would later divulge, he knew over recent days that Smith was close to the end, following a deterioration of his condition.

Nonetheless, nothing can prepare you for the death of a loved lone and make no mistake, there was a bond, a friendship and love between Ally McCoist and Walter Smith.

They had walked much of the journey of life together, over four decades – this relationship, personal and professional, grew different yet closer as they got older.

To listeners, McCoist’s beautiful tribute was profound, sombre yet warm.

It was so emotive and the tears came for many, how he himself held back his own feelings through the obituary is a credit to him.

Jim White, as host, dealt with the matter with empathy and care, he too was a friend of Smith.

Quite simply, this was beautiful and led to an outpouring of feeling from those who commented on Twitter underneath the clip posted by TalkSport, as Ally poured out his heart on the man he held so dear.
