There was a collective sense of euphoria amongst Rangers fans on Friday, when attacker Alfredo Morelos signed a new deal with the Gers. He’s enjoyed a simply brilliant season at Ibrox, and whilst many rival fans question his attitude, we couldn’t be happier that he’s our striker.

Naturally, then, you’d think that a new deal for our main man is a good thing, and it certainly is, but this deal may not be quite what it seems. A new deal typically serves as an example of a player committing their future to their club, but in the case of Morelos, it doesn’t quite come across like that.

After all, he’s been the target of interest from across Europe in recent weeks, via Sky Sports, and that’s a real worry for the club. Not to mention, as per Talk Sport, he spoke of his desire to play in the Premier League last year. Does that sound like a player that is ready to commit his long-term future to Scotland?

What does this deal actually mean, then? Well, from the outside, it simply looks to be a move from Rangers to help keep Morelos’ transfer value high. If his contract expired in a year or two, he’d be worth less than a player of the same quality with 5 years on his contract – it’s simply a case of economics.

He already had a few years left on his contract prior to this renewal, but with every 6 months that he adds to his deal, his value only goes up.

Of course, it also serves to help improve his morale – as a salary increase is likely included – and if that helps keep him at the club for another year or two, that’s great.

But make no mistake, Morelos has his eyes on a bigger prize than the SPFL – and this contract won’t turn his head.
