Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has a tough decision to make regarding the heart of his defence and in particular, Leon Balogun.

The Nigerian international is tried and trusted, but will he come in for the forseeable next to Connor Goldson or will the Gers boss continue to rotate the partnership?

It would be fair to say that Jack Simpson did not impress last Sunday against Motherwell.

He was not alone – all four defenders were culpable for the Steelmen’s equaliser, highlighting the calamity and how preventable it was.

Now onto tonight and the Premier Sports Cup clash against Livingston to see who will get the nod at the back.

If Leon Balogun does return to face Livi, it is likely that he will keep his place going into Saturday’s Premiership trip to Dundee and then a crucial Europa League clash against Sparta Prague.

That then throws up the question of fitness and agility, can the former Brighton and Wigan man play four games in quick succession?

The other option is to give Jack Simpson another chance. Whilst he still isn’t standing out or displaying particular attributes to merit acclaim, he hasn’t and will not likely get a sustained run of games to take full advatage of, in the way that he would at another club.

Time isn’t on his side and he needs to raise his game, fast.

With Filip Helander ruled out for the next few months, Simpson is the third choice option in central defence and he needs to play his part. Quite simply, if he doesn’t, another option will be found with Calvin Bassey capable of stepping in or even Leon King from the B team to be considered.

It’s a tough call with Balogun being the obvious choice however up to now, we haven’t had a settled partner for Goldson so the chances are that the pattern will continue.
