Michael Beale has said that he needs to trim the squad this summer, that he wants to add legs to his team and make it more resilient.

With the Gers gaffer already being quite open about wanting to give Ryan Jack a new contract, why would he then rubber stamp one for Scott Arfield too – even if they are different players.

Former Sky Sports reporter Pete O’Rourke, via Football Insider, has claimed that this is exactly what is being propositioned and that the 34-year old could well be about to have a new contract placed in front of him to sign:

“Rangers chiefs are ready to green light a new contract offer for Scott Arfield.

“The midfielder, 34, is one of eight senior Gers players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season.

“It is believed that Arfield has opened talks with the club about extending his deal by a further 12 months.

“There is no agreement yet in place but the Ibrox board are willing to offer a new deal to Arfield and the ball will then be in his court as to whether he accepts.”

It’s fine to look at the impact that Arfield, with eight goals to his name, has when coming off the bench and praise him for his fitness, energy and obvious dressing room impact, however, at some point we need to move on from players who can’t be relied upon to play every week.

Then there is his position, we have Todd Cantwell, Tom Lawrence, Ianis Hagi, Alex Lowry and the option of Malik Tillman, there simply isn’t room for him to justify a salary based on making the odd appearance.

I love Arfield and he could yet get double figures for the season but, where do you draw the line, how is his influence behind the scenes any more important than Steven Davis or Allan McGregor’s and, let’s face it, how many trophies have we won since they all joined in 2018/19?

It’s time to move on.
