Another Doncaster disaster – the leader who never lead.

The dear old city of Glasgow has its ‘coat of arms’ emblem which depicts the legends of its patron, St Mungo.

These tales are often recalled by the following poem,

There’s the tree that never grew,
There’s the bird that never flew,
There’s the fish that never swam,
There’s the bell that never rang.

It is quite possible that a fifth line could be added to the poem in tribute to the SPFL’s chief executive Neil Doncaster and that would be ‘the leader that never lead’.

This week has been another episode of inaction and ridicule for Doncaster with no real impact on the matters of Celtic’s trip to Dubai, prospects of a ‘null and void’ season in contrast to last year and the latest issue regarding clubs being silenced at the SPFL meeting.

To the layman and ordinary fan, it just appears to be one thing after another, scandal after controversy.

They and Scottish football overall deserve a lot better.

Neil Doncaster is the man who presides over the SPFL Premiership, the flagship football competition in Scotland, which does not have a title sponsor.

At the start of the season, Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack hit out at the governing body in a report carried by the Times.

He blasted the league and its branding strategy, insisting that it does not function like a “real company”, alluding to many issues including the lack of a main sponsor partner.

There was the huge mess last season with calling the leagues early (to favour one club in particular) and the list goes on and on.

It is just not good enough, yet somehow Doncaster is still in a position that carries a salary in excess of £300k

All too often when the going is tough, when leadership is required, the chief executive goes missing and results in ‘Groundhog Day’.

It is time for change for the better, as reflected by these journalist’s comments today.
