Former club captain Barry Ferguson reckons defender Lee Wallace has played his last game for Rangers, writing in his regular column for The Daily Record.

The left-back has barely had a look in working under Steven Gerrard, making just two substitute appearances this season so far, the last of which came back in December.

He hasn’t started a match since September 2017 and with his contract up at the end of the season, Ferguson thinks he may have played his last game for the club after 256 games in total.

Writing in his Daily Record column, Ferguson said:

As far as I’m concerned he’s already kicked his last ball in a Rangers shirt and, as painful as that will be, it’s now about where he goes next and how he rebuilds the rest of his career.

At the age of 31 he has at least another four years of top level football ahead of him and I’d imagine he’ll have one eye on getting back into the Scotland set-up, which is where he belongs even though we have some pretty strong competition for the No.3 shirt.

That he’s been reduced to the role of the fourth best left back at Rangers does seem pretty strange to me but I can only assume that this is based entirely upon the opinion of the manager.

It’s clearly been a frustrating season for Wallace and leaving Ibrox is probably the best thing for him right now considering Gerrard obviously doesn’t rate his talents.

He was a loyal servant and captain during some dark years for the club and although he fell out with the Ibrox hierarchy last season in the wake of a dreadful 4-0 defeat to Celtic at Hampden, he will likely leave with the best wishes of supporters, many of whom would love to see him make one last first-team bow.

Gerrard doesn’t seem the kind for sentiment though and the chances of Wallace playing again are, as Ferguson mentions, slim at best.
