The performance of Allan McGregor in Saturday’s Old Firm victory for Rangers has been rightly praised.

A standout man of the match performance showed that the 38 year old is still at the very top of his game.

He took the limelight from his Celtic counterpart Vasilis Barkas who didn’t have to face a Rangers shot on target yet still had to pick the ball out of his net.

Thanks largely to McGregor, Rangers recorded a crucial 1-0 win in a game that further highlighted the disparity between the goalkeepers at both clubs, which has been a feature this season.

Ex-Rangers winger and popular TV pundit Neil McCann described the ‘save of the season’ from the Rangers No1, on BBC Sportscene.

Former Rangers goalkeeping coach Jim Stewart discussed the merits of McGregor in the same bracket as Rangers great Andy Goram, such is his quality and consistency in conversation with the Daily Record,

“He is without doubt in an elite band of Rangers goalkeepers including Goram, Klos, Woods and guys of that ilk.”

In particular, the save from Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths on Saturday was stunning. At full stretch, the ball was tipped onto the post and out for a corner.

Was this McGregor’s best ever save?

How does it compare to these other big moments that he has produced in between the sticks for Rangers?

Rangers 0 Celtic – 24 April 2011 – Samaras penalty save.

The Rangers keeper’s save from Georgios Samaras’ spot kick in the 81st minute was pivotal to Rangers retaining their SPL crown in 2011.

A Celtic win would have meant they went two points clear with a game in hand.

Instead, the smart save to his left ensured Rangers stayed one point clear. Celtic slipped up in Inverness and the Gers went on to lift the title on the last day in Kilmarnock.

Werder Bremen 1 Rangers 0 – 13 March 2008 – THAT save.

Following a first leg, 2-0 victory, Rangers headed to Germany in the Last 16 tie in a good position.

They faced an onslaught with the Brazilian playmaker Diego pulling the strings. He scored in the second-half as Rangers were fighting to prevent extra-time.

With only five minutes left to play, a cross was directed back across the danger area and from point blank range with the net gaping, McGregor managed to tip a Sanogo toe-poke onto the bar and the rebound fell to a Rangers defender to clear.

They are both iconic saves in that Rangers era under Walter Smith.

The importance of Saturday’s performance by Allan McGregor is yet unknown in terms of the title race, but it certainly was a major factor in the three points staying at Ibrox.

What was the best save of the three? You decide.
