One time Rangers target Allan Campbell will definitely be leaving Motherwell this summer after his manager, Graham Alexander, confirmed that, alongside Declan Gallagher, the midfield will head for pastures new.

The Daily Record reported on the 22-year old’s decision not to sign a new contract with the club he has made over 150 appearances for with the Steelmen set to secure a £500,000 training compensation fee, Alexander is reluctant to let him go but understands the Scotland youth cap’s motives:

“I had one last shot at it a couple of weeks ago and we did offer him a very good contract for us, because I didn’t want to get to the summer, he goes elsewhere and we hadn’t tried everything we can to keep him.

“As I keep saying, he’s a brilliant player, a brilliant professional, and any manager would be desperately keen to keep him on board.

“I know the reasons why, and I can understand the reasons why, as an ex-player myself. We had a great chat the other week, he was honest as he always is, and I could see his perspective, so he will be leaving in the summer and I hope he gets the best club he can.”

There are only two clubs in Scotland that could realistically afford such a fee and Celtic would be unlikely to add yet another Motherwell midfielder to their ranks, Campbell is a good prospect but wouldn’t improve them immediately – which is what they need – he would at least be able to play 90 minutes which is more than David Turnbull can do though.

Ryan Jack’s prognosis looks a lot better now that he has gone under the knife so the need for extra midfielders isn’t quite as desperate, Steven Gerrard didn’t want to put a specific date on his return but he should be back at some point during pre-season.

I still think Campbell is worth the punt though and that he has a lot to work with, it’s more a fear of him going on to be worth millions if he has a decent season in the Championship similar to the way that John McGinn went up a level rather than thinking that he is an upgrade on anything we have at the moment – one to keep an eye on…
