Rangers are trialling an interesting initiative tonight for the Europa League game against Royal Antwerp.

In a venture to engage and ‘bring fans closer’, the club are hosting a virtual ‘watch party’.

The statement on the club website included:

‘Rangers are delighted to announce details of an innovative virtual ticket for our UEFA Europa League second leg tie with Royal Antwerp.’

‘The virtual tickets include a digital matchday programme, bonus MyGers points and access to a ‘second screen’ viewing experience on the HotMic app, hosted by legendary commentator Clive Tyldesley and first-team striker Jermain Defoe.’

Using the latest technology, the app is designed to synch with the BT Sport audio in real time to provide a seamless overlap, providing with fans with the insight of Tyldesley and Defoe on the game on another device whilst watching the game on the main screen.

It remains to be seen how this venture will work out but it is good that Rangers are trying things and bringing in additional revenue to the club.

As stated, it is another way of gathering MyGers points – which is somewhat of a thorny issue amongst the Gers support.

Some are welcoming of the chance to accrue more points while others are more cynical, claiming it’s just a money grab.

The truth is somewhere in between with Rangers needing to bring in revenue during the pandemic as well as the ongoing evolution of the MyGers membership scheme.

It will be interesting to gauge the reaction to the online event and VitalRangers will have it covered – both here on our website as well as on Twitter – @vitalrangers
