Former Rangers midfielder, Charlie Adam, has attempted to clear up his comments made in 2012 when he was asked about the plight of his old club under the stewardship of Charles Green.

Speaking on The Daily Record Rangers podcast (via The Daily Record), Adam makes an impassioned defence of how his words – “I’m not really interested” – were taken out of context and how it led to him being black listed by Gers fans to the extent that some fans booed him in a “legends” match earlier in this season.

When asked to clarify his throwaway remarks, he said:

“I made a silly comment in 2012 when the whole Charles Green thing was going on and there were issues. I made a comment, somebody asked me and I said: ‘I’m not really interested’.

“It’s not that I wasn’t interested in Rangers Football Club, I wasn’t interested in what was going on off the pitch because these people were scything the club out of millions of pounds.

“I got crucified for it.

“When I went back and played in that legends game there were a few boos. But, listen, Rangers will always mean a lot to me.

“It’s where I started, it’s a great club. One day you could always go back and watch a proper game there, it’s great and the people are always welcoming.

“Hopefully, people can realise it wasn’t towards any supporters or the players it was to people who were scything millions out of the club.”

Adam was part of a crop of youngsters that broke through into the Rangers first team at the same time with the likes of Alan Hutton, Steven Smith and Chris Burke all contributing to Walter Smith’s side in his second spell in charge.

He wasn’t always popular with the Ibrox faithful with his tendency to hit “Hollywood” passes rather than take the safe option not going down well, the irony that Gers fans would love to have a similar player coming through now won’t be lost on many.

One of the rare highlights of Paul le Guen’s ill-fated tenure, Adam scored 11 goals and had 4 assists in the 2006/07 campaign before he found himself increasingly on the fringes with Smith preferring hard work and solidity over flair and creativity in the middle of the park.

Adam’s comments show how easy it is to fall foul of fans, especially during what was such an emotive time for Rangers, he may not have meant any harm by them but with hindsight, he should have chosen them more wisely.
