It’s safe to say that Rangers fans have not had a good weekend, however, in an attempt to find something to raise the mood, a quick look at one of our on-loan players has potentially provided a more positive glimpse into the future.

Very rarely do youngsters leave Auchenhowie to join another team on a temporary basis and return to make an impact in the first-team, Charlie Adam, probably, being the only notable exception in terms of outfield players – Allan McGregor being the exception rather than the norm. Adam divides opinion, but he can point to key goals in Old Firm and European games as proof that he did alright for himself.

In recent seasons, we’ve seen highly thought of youngsters like Kai Kennedy and Josh McPake struggle and Stephen Kelly – who did little wrong at every club he went to – fail to command a regular place when he returned despite the highest of praise from senior team-mates.

In Cole McKinnon though, we have a player who has already made an impact in the first-team after a goal at Tynecastle last season and has carried that momentum into this season, already picking up a man of the match award for Partick Thistle and scoring the beautifully taken goal shown above.

There is a gaping hole in our squad for a number eight and a midfielder that can offer a genuine box-to-box option, a criticism that has been thrown at the board and Ross Wilson is our reluctance to invest, maybe, in McKinnon and Charlie McCann, we won’t need to.
