Rangers will have to win the final Group G match away to Rapid Vienna to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League after a disappointing draw at home to Villarreal on Thursday night.
Vienna had earlier picked up a shock win against Spartak Moscow, leaving the door open for Steven Gerrard’s side to take a massive step towards the last 32.
However, a first half sending off for Daniel Candeias left us with too much to do, even if we remained competitive throughout. If not for Allan McGregor it would’ve been a certain defeat.
One player who didn’t get pass marks for his performances was left-back Jon Flanagan, who was wasteful in possession and positionally unsound throughout the 90 minutes.
He has become one of the weak links in Gerrard’s starting eleven and his continued selection is starting to frustrate and baffle supporters.
These fans took to Twitter in the wake of last night’s draw to share their thoughts on his role at Rangers…

I could make a 3 minute compilation of Jon Flanagan cutting in and playing a hospital ball to the centre back. Don’t know why opts to cut across it or skim it when he could just play it normally. Nearly cost us.

The fact we sold Declan John and now play Jon Flanagan makes me want to projectile vomit

What DOES Gerrard see in Jon Flanagan? Lack of attacking threat is OK in a defender who can defend – but he is poor at that too. Lacks any positional sense at times. A clear weak link in the defence and his uncertainty contaminates Worrall at times. #RANVIL
