Rangers have confirmed this week that Academy prospect Liam Burt has signed a one-year contract extension at the club to the summer of 2019.

The teenager made his debut for the club back in 2016 at the age of just 17, but has managed to make just three appearances for the senior side in total. His previous deal had been due to expire this summer.

He spent the second half of last season out on loan at Scottish Championship side Dumbarton, making 19 appearances for total and getting vital first-team experience under his belt. Although he impressed in midfield for the Sons, the team were subsequently relegated to League One.

It’ll be interesting to see which path his career now takes over the next 12 months. With the deal only being a year, the pressure remains on to continue his development and fight for his future at Ibrox.

Can he make an impact on Gerrard’s first team squad or is a loan more viable? Perhaps gaining experience in the Scottish Premiership would go a long way towards becoming the calibre of player Rangers need.

These supporters are delighted he has signed a new deal and took to Twitter to share their thoughts…

How should Rangers handle the development of Liam Burt next season after signing his new contract? Should he be sent out on loan or should Steven Gerrard give him a first-team chance?

Have your say in our poll below…
