‘A lesson learned’ – Rangers star is brutally honest about failings in Gerrard’s debut season

|

Scott Arfield is hoping Rangers have learned their lessons about consistency ahead of a push for major honours next season, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

The midfielder has offered fans an honest assessment of what’s gone wrong in Steven Gerrard’s debut season as manager in the wake of his superb hat-trick away to Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Everyone knows this season has been something of a failure considering we did not reach a major final nor did we really push Celtic close in the title race.

Arfield is hoping though that the building blocks are in now in place for a successful 2019/20 season.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the Canadian international said:

Inconsistency has killed us throughout the season. We take so many steps forward and then a wee one back. When you’re going up against top teams, inconsistency absolutely kills you and that is why we’re a wee bit behind now.

Hopefully in the long run it’s a lesson learned and next season will be better for us.

There could be many factors why it hasn’t always happened. You could talk about the amount of games, you could talk about people’s fitness, but at the end of the day it’s all about us and we haven’t done it consistently enough.

You can’t point fingers. You need to look at yourself, particularly at a club this size, and control the controllables. We want to finish the season on a high then go after it next season.

Two 3-0 victories in a row have certainly helped fans forget about last week’s derby disaster, but supporters will likely expect nothing less than five good results after the top six split to prove we can beat the best teams in the country regularly.

The visit of Celtic to Ibrox in May will give Gerrard and his team to set the tone for next season and start to build momentum again.

Hopefully players like Arfield can lead by example and prove they want this side to win serious silverware.
