If Connor Goldson is to be sold this summer, one man who won’t be coming in to replace him is former Elfsborg defender, Joseph Okumu.

The Kenyan international was first linked with a move to Ibrox when speculation emerged surrounding the future of Filip Helander with Aston Villa and Leicester City rumoured to be preparing £6million bids, however, if he was on a list of potential targets, the “monster” defender will have to be rubbed out now.

The towering defender has been announced as KAA Gent’s latest signing with a fee believed to be in the region of £3million becoming the third most expensive defender to leave Swedish football in the process.

The 24-year old looked as though he could be a quality addition to Steven Gerrard’s squad but with six senior centre-halves already at the club, any additions would have been dependent on players leaving the club.

Bids have been rejected already for George Edmundson and Goldson is yet to sign a new contract which does raise some questions for our recruitment team, but with Leon Balogun already signed up for next season, Nikola Katic set to return to full training and Jack Simpson having the benefit of joining early in January, there simply isn’t any need to bring anyone in immediately.

It’s a position we are currently well catered for but it wouldn’t take much for that to change, if there is even the slightest hint that Gerrard’s vice-captain is not extending his current deal, Ross Wilson should be getting his contacts book out asap to get someone of similar quality in – it just isn’t going to be Okumu.
