Jacob Murphy – despite initial reports – is not available on a free contract this summer, however there remains confusion on the status of the 25-year old Newcastle United winger.

Transfermarkt has the England youth cap’s contract ending this summer whereas Sportrac claims that when he first signed in 2017 that he signed a five-year contract taking up to the end of the 2021/22 season.

The Newcastle Chronicle, who has always had close ties with the club and been the go to source for local information reported that Murphy – who cost the Magpies £12million – is one of 10 players who could leave this year and Steve Bruce’s comments throughout the season would also suggest that there is an urgency to get him signed up rather than still having a year to run.

Football Insider claims that Rangers are still interested in pursuing a deal for Murphy but will have to pay £3m to secure his services, which would still represent value for money for player with his experience, quality and potential sell-on value.

With Scott Wright already in the door and looking to be a bargain, Murphy would be another step up in quality from the likes of Jordan Jones and Brandon Barker – if we were able to get close to a seven-figure sum for the pair of on loan wingers, deemed surplus to requirements, Ross Wilson would be a very contented man.

Rangers are shopping in a different market now, we are able to use Champions League football as an incentive to potential targets, regardless of whether or not Newcastle survive the drop, the choice between playing in Europe’s premier competition and another relegation battle is not much of a contest.
