Newcastle United could be set to renew their interest in Alfredo Morelos after it was reported that the Ibrox club have reduced their asking price for the Colombian international.

Steven Gerrard had previously said that he wouldn’t sell Morelos for £50million given his form before the winter break with £20m always thought to be the realistic figure that Rangers would entertain, however, The Newcastle Chronicle has reported that a fee of around £13m would now be enough to secure his services.

The paper claims that Newcastle had enquired about Morelos’ availability in January only to receive no encouragement from the Gers hierarchy but with another, seemingly, unsuccessful league campaign, Gerrard appears to be looking at other options to lead his attack.

Who was the first signing of Rangers 9-in-a-row success in 1988/89?

Josh Maja, formerly of Newcastle’s fiercest rivals Sunderland, has emerged as the latest target and certainly fits the profile required to be a success at Ibrox, however, his reported £57,000 wage could be a stumbling block.

Lawrence Shankland is also another name on the list but his lack of experience – despite his international status – would be a concern for most Rangers fans.

It has been the proverbial season of two halves for Morelos with 28 of his 29 domestic goals coming before the winter break, he has been unlucky with fitness and having a couple of goals disallowed but the team as a whole has also underperformed, it isn’t purely down to the Gerrard’s number 20’s drop in form.

If Morelos is playing his last games for the club fans should make the most of him whilst he is still here, for a youngster who cost around £900k to have the impact he has is nothing short of remarkable, if only the Scottish media appreciated him as much as fans of the Light Blues did.
